THREADS       alter ego installation [issey miyake]

Issey Miyake is an artist who defies the conventions of fashion design to create new, awe-inspiring works. This installation reflects how he deconstructs complexities to their basic elements, forming new, iconic works of his own.

Strings, representing the fundamentals of fashion design, are simply tied across the atrium and do not touch or intersect. Yet, they weave and interact to form visual interest and complexity as a whole. What they also form are different spatial experiences when viewed from different perspectives, like a poetic journey symbolic of movement, which Miyake constantly explores in the design of his clothes.

If looked at in detail, what one sees are individual strings, with gaps in between. These gaps portray the ambiguity of voids – the space between the body and the cloth. But when viewed on the whole as a bigger picture, one notices the implied planes the groups of strings create and the subsequent geometric shapes and volumes they thus form.

Fundamentals and simplicity are never too rudimental to explore, for these building blocks allow for the breaking down of old barriers and the creation of new realities which is what Issey Miyake brings to the fashion design industry.
